Vietnam's New Stock Markets

On July 20, 2000, Vietnam launched the Ho Chi Minh City Securities Trading Centre with trading in the shares of just two listed companies, Refrigeration Electronic Engineering Joint Stock Company (REE) and Saigon Cable and Telecommunication Material Joint Stock Company (Sacom).  The HCMC Exchange now provides a market for the shares of listed companies and funds, and also provides a market for government and corporate bonds.

On March 8, 2005, Vietnam launched the Hanoi Securities Trading Centre.  The first trade on the Hanoi bourse, an "over the counter" market for stocks and bonds, involved the shares of Post and Telecommunications Equipment Factory.

The Road from Doi Moi to WTO

In 1986, in the wake of a devastating drought that slashed crop yields across the country, Vietnam launched doi moi, a program of "economic renewal".  This launch marked the start of Vietnam's transition away from a centrally-planned economy and towards "a market economy with a socialist orientation".

Vietnam’s bid for membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) began in 1995.  Integral to this bid, the country has pursued reforms that are making markets increasingly competitive.  This, in turn, is forcing state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to restructure operations and seek outside capital.  As a result, Vietnam's capital markets, while still in the formative stage, are beginning to flourish.
